California earthquake insurance may not be on the top of your list of things to consider when you first move to the Sunshine State. However, once you do a bit of research about California’s earthquake history, you may find that it moves further up on your list of priorities!

According to the Californian Department of Conservation there have been 77 significant earthquakes in the state since 1700. They include San Francisco’s devastating April 1906 fire earthquake which measured 7.8 on the Richter Scale and left more than 3000 people dead and a damage bill of more than $524 million – a hefty amount for the early 1900s.

More recent earthquakes include the October 1989 quake at Loma Prieta which caused more than 3700 injuries, 63 deaths and resulted in $6 billion in damaged property. There was also the Northridge 6.7 magnitude quake in January 1994, which left 57 people dead, more than 9000 people injured and a massage damage bill of $40 billion.

The US Geological Survey website also offers a very interesting visual representation of daily earthquake events throughout California. It features maps, animations and a search facility to find information about previous quakes. There have certainly been many devastating earthquakes that have hit California in recent years. All in all, the history, current data and scientific theory makes a compelling case for taking out California earthquake insurance
