California has been lucky to have not faced an earthquake of any major magnitude for some time. This should not be a time however to become complacent about the need for California earthquake insurance. Your home could be substantially damaged by even a minor localized earthquake and the decision not to purchase insurance could prove very costly.

An earthquake may not only damage the structure of your home but potentially your belongings as well. Imagine having to start from scratch without a home or clothes and food. Any government relief packages that may be available would be very limited and are designed only to get people back on their feet not replace everything they had. It is worth assessing the reality of your situation should the unthinkable happen and weigh it up against the costs of insuring. Finding temporary accommodation even after a minor earthquake could be difficult and costly.

When doing your annual review of other insurance policy needs be sure to include California earthquake insurance as well. It could be a grave error to think it will not happen again for years. The cost of your insurance premium will pale into insignificance should an earthquake occur. No part of California is immune to earthquakes.
